WHY COMMUNICATION STUDIES?

It’s been said that Communication Studies serves as a gateway for employment. You can do anything from film and production, journalism, and advertisement to writing for public relations. Communication offers a wealth of opportunities to not only expand your learning but also grow the knowledge of others.

The path of deciding on a major looked a little different to me. At 40 years old, I decided to go back to college. During my entire adult years, I’ve served as an advocate for children in foster care. What I came to realize as an advocate is just how much of a shortage in the legal system. Children fall through the gaps, simply because of the lack of legal representation. It made me sick. With this, I made a vow that I would be an attorney for children and decided to go back to school and work towards a law degree.

Upon returning to college, given my history, I naturally thought I would work towards a degree in Social Work.  However, just a few weeks in, I realized the content was super repetitive. I didn’t feel like I would learn anything new, and needed something to challenge me, as well as allow me to grow, or branch out if you will. So, I met with a college advisor to determine what major would work best and dig deep. The obvious choice was Communication Studies, so here I am!

While speaking with my advisor, I landed on Communication Studies, as I realized I have always had an issue as an advocate with communicating in the courtroom. I would freeze up when called upon to speak on behalf of a foster child. This was a real problem for me, even during my first communication class in public speaking, I had to learn how to speak and do it with confidence.

Communication is literally what makes the world go around, from how we speak, to how we interpret, culture, to how we relate to others. Even in our daily lives, communication is key. I’ve always heard experts say that simple line and thought it was so cliché, but after majoring in communication studies, I’m a firm believer that communication is key!
